Chinese is one of the world's oldest continuously used written languages, with origins tracing back over 3,000 years to oracle bone inscriptions during the Shang Dynasty. Modern Standard Chinese (commonly called Mandarin) is characterized by its tonal system and logographic writing system using characters that represent meaning rather than sound. Chinese is also the language with the most native speakers in the world.
